Time

Everyone wants to be healthy. We all want lives that are free from physical pain and complications. A key component to enjoying that healthy lifestyle is not being overweight, but losing weight and keeping it off takes significant time and energy. Who really has the time?

Mountain Air Health, a company based in Boulder, Colorado, has come up with a novel solution to our weight loss dilemma.

Between the alarm clock’s buzz first thing in the morning to the final seconds of our day when we rest our heads on our pillows, each and every minute seems full of things to do. There’s work, familial responsibilities, entrepreneurial pursuits, community service, activism, and yes, even the occasional brief respite of relaxation. Combined, these consume every waking moment of the day.

It’s hardly a surprise to anyone that finding time to eat healthily or to exercise usually takes a backseat to our daily task list, our chores, and our distractions. Our time is eaten away. Our energy is sucked right out of us.

Unless we’re disciplined enough to wake up an extra hour or two early each day, workouts and food prep are likely getting skipped. They certainly aren’t happening at the end of the day when there’s barely enough energy left over to plop down on the couch and watch or read something.

What sane person would sacrifice their limited sleep hours anyhow? Not me. I need all the sleep I can get to barely recharge my batteries for my already busy tomorrow.

There’s good news for those of us who want to lose weight and keep it off, but don’t have enough time to fit in all the exercise it requires.

Mountain Air Health has come up with a way to support clients trying to lose weight and keep the weight off – while they sleep. They have developed a product called MountainAir™.

MountainAir™ is a tent enclosure that goes around your bed and an air separation unit that simulates a high altitude atmosphere inside the enclosure. The model available now fits a full or queen size bed, and can be set for an altitude as high as 12,000 feet.

But why would anyone want to adjust their sleeping altitude?

Because altitude has interesting effects on human physiology.

The difference between living at altitude and residing at sea level is the amount of oxygen in the air. The reduced oxygen found at high altitude creates a condition within the body called hypoxia. Multiple scientific studies show interesting and safe reactions that occur within our bodies when we experience prolonged states of hypoxia. The most notable is the increase in our Basal Metabolic Rate. Our Basal Metabolic Rate, or BMR for short, is our body’s metabolism while it’s at rest.

We have all witnessed those people with high metabolisms that can eat anything they want and not gain a pound. Why aren’t those people struggling to lose weight and keep the weight off like we do? It’s because their bodies are continually burning calories.

Most of us aren’t that lucky, but even we can increase our metabolism through altitude exposure. When we do, our body is likely to undergo the same process of burning our excess calories and fat.

The MountainAir™ tent allows us to reap all the physiological benefits of altitude while we sleep, making it easier to meet weight loss goals during the day, and never adds a minute of extra “to-do” time.   Sleeping inside the enclosure, the simulated altitude is similar to that of a hike in the high peaks of the Rocky Mountains.

Mountain Air Health has found a way to allow us to stop worrying about where to wedge weight loss into our already overloaded schedules. I certainly love the idea of burning fat while I sleep.

Now if I could only find a way to work in my sleep as well…
